Gynecomastia

With men, it is possible that mammary glands begin to grow owing to a hormonal disbalance, and they can grow to a size similar to a female breast. In the case of a mammary gland’s growth in men, we speak of gynecomastia. In this case, the patient must undergo an endocrinology examination and, upon confirming the gynecomastia diagnosis, we are able to solve the problem surgically, upon the endocrinologist’s recommendation.

In the event a small gynecomastia is concerned, it is usually sufficient to drain the adipose tissue from the breast via liposuction. This operation can be carried out under local anaesthesia, without hospitalisation.

In the event the gland is bigger, it is necessary to remove it via an incision around the areola. There will only be a thin scar on the outer side of the areola. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia, and requires hospitalisation for 1-2 days.

In the event the male breast is too large and hung, then it is necessary to remove the gland together with the excessive skin. The post-surgery scars then lead around the areola, down towards the under-breast crease and into the under-breast crease. This surgery is also carried out under general anaesthesia and requires hospitalisation for 1-2 days.

Post-Surgery Care

In case only a breast liposuction was carried out, then the post-surgery care corresponds to the liposuction post-surgery care. In case the incision was removed surgically, the doctor removes the radons used to drain off the rest of the blood liquid the next day after the surgery. The patient’s chest is tightened using a compression vest. The vest can be taken off 3 days after the surgery, the gauze from the incision is removed, but the patches are not removed from the skin. The patient dresses the patches with a disinfectant and covers the breast with sterile gauze again. This re-bandaging is carried out by the patient every other day, though without washing the breast. 14 days later, the patient can remove the patches covering the breast and it is possible to take a shower. The compression vest is worn for 4 weeks after the surgery. Scar massages may begin on the 18th day after the surgery. A finger is used to exert pressure on the scar for 30 seconds and then the finger is moved to another place on the scar. This massage is carried out several times a day and it is also suitable to use scar creams. In the case of a breast liposuction, office work is possible 3 days after the surgery. In the case of the surgical removal of the mammary gland, we recommend office work no sooner than a week later. Full physical strain is possible 4 weeks after the surgery.
