What is a ganglion?

A ganglion is a benign cyst filled with a jelly-like fluid. It most commonly occurs in the joints and tendons of the upper limbs – on the wrist, back of the hand or fingers. It often arises as a result of excessive strain, trauma or repeated mechanical irritation. This formation often restricts movement and can be aesthetically distracting and grow to the size of a hen’s egg. It is sometimes painful. With surgical removal of the ganglion, patients get significant relief, plus the risk of recurrence is minimised.

Preparation before the procedure

  • Discontinue or adjust the dosage of blood thinners 7 days before the procedure as agreed with the doctor
  • Have a light meal 2–3 hours before the procedure
  • Do not wear jewellery or nail polish in the area

  • Outpatient, under local anaesthesia
  • Complete removal of the cyst, including the cyst capsule
  • Duration: approx. 20–40 minutes

After the procedure

  • Instructions for home care
  • Common analgesics for pain control

Follow-up

  • Usually 7–10 days after the procedure
  • Stitches are absorbable or removable

Increased restrictions: 1 week of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Rest for 1–2 weeks
  • Load limitation as recommended by your doctor
  • Resume normal activity in 1–3 weeks
  • Relapse is possible, but the risk is significantly lower after complete removal

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for:

  • Persons with acute inflammation at the procedure site
  • Persons with recurrent ganglia
  • Pregnant women (in case of general anaesthesia)
  • Persons with a severe internal disease

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Swelling, infection, bleeding
  • Damage to adjacent structures
  • Possible recurrence of ganglia
