WHAT IS LASER UVULOPLASTY (LAUP)?

Laser uvuloplasty (LAUP) offers an effective and gentle solution for patients suffering from primary snoring. Laser uvuloplasty (LAUP) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that uses a laser to reshape the soft palate and uvula, reducing their vibration when breathing during sleep. The result is a significant reduction or complete elimination of snoring in 80–90% of patients. The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

Targets:

  • No special restrictions, compliance with the doctor’s instructions.

  • Lasting 15–20 minutes.
  • The laser is used to shorten the uvula and strengthen the soft palate with incisions that will promote its firmness.

  • The patient goes home immediately after the procedure.
  • Rest and analgesics for pain when swallowing are recommended.

  • Routine follow-up in 7–14 days after the procedure.

Increased restrictions: 1 week of rest after the procedure

Recommendations

  • Sore throat similar to tonsillitis lasting usually 5–7 days
  • Mild pain in the nose lasting usually 2–3 days
  • Avoid physical exertion and hot foods
  • Return to normal activities after one week

Contraindications

Possible complications

The treatment is not suitable for:

  • Persons diagnosed with sleep apnoea
  • Persons with a BMI above 30
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons with acute upper respiratory tract infection

Possible complications are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Insufficient effect upon incorrect indication
